Hey Alyssa! Tell us more about you!
Hello! My name is Alyssa but friends call me Kau :) I am a certified Yoga Instructor (RYT 200 Yoga Alliance) and Personal Trainer (ACE). I’ve been in the fitness industry for many years, and have worked for fitness studios across Singapore teaching yoga, barre, boxing and HIIT. I spend my summers in Singapore, and my winters in ski resorts teaching skiing and working in hospitality.
How has your background shaped your identity today?
Most of my adult years were spent studying and practicing law. Funnily enough, that was also when my yoga practice started. Time on my mat was sacred and special - it was a way for me to tune out everything (i.e. the stress and anxiety that came with law school) and focus on nourishing my body and mind one breath at a time. This was when I realised being a lawyer was not what I wanted to do with my life, so I picked up the courage to leave and never looked back. It definitely has not been easy, but I get to wake up every day and do what makes me happy.
What's a typical day like for you?
I wake up, stretch, cuddle my dog, have my morning coffee and spend my day teaching.
What's your concept of beauty, and how has it evolved?
To me, beauty has evolved from aesthetics to individuality and being true to your authentic self. We live in a world that constantly tells us what to do, how to act, what to be - and when you find the courage to embrace vulnerability and break free from these societal expectations, you glow and shine from within. That to me is beautiful ;)
Could you share your favourite self-care tips and wellness rituals?
Yin yoga is always something I look forward to at the end of my day. There are many yin yoga videos on YouTube that you can follow - think pillows, supported stretches, soothing music and guided meditation. This is something I try to do every day to put my mind and body to rest.
What's your guiding philosophy in life?
“Energy flows where intention goes” Set your intention, dream big and fight for things that excite you!
Any resolutions for 2021 and beyond?
To be more mindful and present. This means spending your energy wisely, focusing on things you can change rather than worrying about things you cannot change. We cannot avoid the unexpected events in our lives but we can control how we respond to them. Covid has definitely messed up my travel plans and my winter work for the foreseeable future, but I'm choosing to grow and embrace the work opportunities offered to me here.
